Computer Is Skipping

Every once in a while my computer will start skipping. For example, if I move my mouse it will stop for a second and then continue its path on the screen. All programs appear to do the same. Any clues as to what is going on? I have had this setup for about 2 years now. My setup: P3 450MHz, 2 hard drives, 448MB RAM, WinXP Pro.

Could be that your mouse needs cleaning.

Your title is funny LOL. Makes me imagine that the computer is skipping on a rope 😀

This actually happened to me a few times. Sometimes it would start "skipping", and the music would start "pausing" to go along with the slowdown. I really didn't have much of a fix for it, but since I re-formatted/re-installed frequently, it just went away. Hasn't happened (On the Same System) for about a year now.


Sorry, I can't really reccomend much of a fix for you.

Is DMA enabled on your hard drives?

Right click on My Computer
Select Properties
Hardware tab
Device Manager
Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Right click on the Primary Channel
Select Properties
Advanced Settings tab
Make sure that DMA if available is set for all devices. Do this for the Secondary Channel as well.

Also, do you have chipset drivers installed?

I checked for DMA and it says Ultra DMA mode 2 is what is being used for both the hard drives. I never installed any chipset drivers. Should I? Do you think this skipping could mean that one of my hard drives is going to fail?

It could be your virus scanner running in the background or maybe a mail checking program. Your specs seem to be running almost at teh limits of winXp.
