COMPUTER IS POSSESSED

After I turned off the computer (winXP Prof) it shut down completely, then seemed to try and reboot. The lights on the front of the computer both go on, and all 3 lights on the keyboard go on, then go off. This cycles every 3-5 seconds. You can hear the hard drive spinning, kind of like the cdrom not loading properly. I unplugged the computer, and it stopped, I plugged it back in and it started again. I tried to presss the start button, and on the 8th or 10th try it booted up. Must have pressed it at the exact right time. I then turned computer off again, and it started all over again.

Any ideas?

Well, After I turned it on, and left in all for 24 hours, I turned it off to see if it would do it again. previously it did it like 10 seconds after it turned off, and every 5 seconds after that. This time I waited about a minute, and it did it only once, then since hasnt done it. It is intermittant. So I turned it on again after a while, then turned it off, and it didnt do it at all this time. just weird.

Actually, now that I think of it, this could be purely mechanical in nature, believe it or not. With father's Dell, he had a similar problem (hard to start up). Ends up, the crappy Dell case had a clear plastic piece hinged to the front bezel that acted both as a lever for the power button and as a fiberoptic to transfer the LED light to the button. One of the hinge tabs broke, and as a result I had to jury-rig it up to be able to boot.

Although it isn't likely the cause for your problem, it is a possibility. All you would have to do is check the front bezel of the case to see if it implements the same kind of system.

That coudl very well be the problem, could be a problem with either the power button or reset button. Easy way to test it, power it on, the disconnect the power button from the motherboard, Shut down, and see if it does it. If it still does it, next do the same thing, but disconnect the reset switch.
