Computer installed in a Trans Am:

Heh.. I agree. It just looks, well, cheesy. And not to mention the fact that it's fragile, open to electrical interference, will get dusty, and might get stuff thrown on top of it at some point. If you're going to go with that vid card, why not go with a mobo that's got a matching red PCB? And what's with the flames on the PS?

Only a VW driver would put a MacMini into their car... I guess some people like their car computing experience to be as limited as their desk computing experience... great install... poor choice of machine.

No offense meant, but it really does fit the stereotype to have such a pug-fugly install in a Camaro, just as it seems fitting to have this ultra-clean one in a VW.

wow, that's a really nice install! I'd get one of these if I were going to do a carputer project. I'd at least put some plexi or clear acrylic in the trans am's install, for dust and such. I wonder how that system handles the car's vibration...

I guess it depends what you're after. I wouldn't really be interested in a computer install in my car in the first place, but to the extent I was, a MacMini would be as nice as anything, I guess. It's not as though I would sit in my car playing games, and that is the only real shortcoming of the Mac platform IMO. I am agnostic about the Mac interface vs. Windows, but God knows I'd rather look at OS X.x in my dashboard than Windows - it's definitely a lot prettier.

I've recently been monkeying with a Mac with some regularity (my GF has one), and I can't say I see a meaningful benefit in terms of reliability vs. a solid XP Pro build.

Again, I can't see it. What would you want to use a computer for _in_your_car_ that a Mac couldn't do with aplomb? It seems to me it'd pretty much solely be used as an MP3 player and occasionally for movies, and the Mac can do those things just fine, not to mention the much prettier interface. God knows I'm no Mac lover (the only one I've ever owned was the original 128K Mac), but I honestly can't see why you'd be better off with a PC in your car.

I really wish I knew somone that could help me buy the right accessories for my 2002 Acura TL. I really want to add a video input to that Navi screen, but keep on finding conflicting information on all these sites.

Ugh.

And I need to find someone to INSTALL it! I could try, but don't trust myself 🙂

I've been putting it off for too long.

I use mine for MP3s, GPS, rear view, diagnostics
I can't say a PC would be better but I know the programs are there to do what I want aren't available for mac afaik.

hmm, I can see your point. I've learned how to tweak Windows XP to the point where it doesn't crash anymore (doing a fresh Ghost install monthly will do that to you lol). Also, there's TONS more software available for PC than for Mac, which makes the PC a better choice if you're a tinkerer who likes to use other people's programs. Personally, I'm sticking with XP for now. Macs are nice but half my main programs don't run on them and XP is working out just great 🙂
