Computer Iliterate

I was reading the forem about the AMDs new processor naming system that has become so contriversial and I started to wonder... I havent been around the computer world that long.... really I have only been into it for about 2 1/2 years since im only about 17. Anyways, what does everyone think the true cause of mass computer illiteracy? Do you think it was because of faster economy causing people to buy? do you think its advertisement?

I think it has something to do with the fear of being overwhelmed...there is so much information to learn and it all moves so quickly...it might also have something to do with the stereotyping of people that already know this information (people don't want to be considered computer dorks). but who knows? maybe everyone is more clever than we give them credit for...maybe they already know all they want to know about the subject.

well not everybody has the time or need to become computer literate. where i work, we get a lot of calls from medical doctors and professors and whatnot. these are people who didn't grow up around computers and just don't use them enough to really need a lot of knowledge in them.

I would really prefer my Doctor to be reading the JAMA instead of trying to watercool an overclocked processor.
Lots of people can drive a car. Not too many can tear down, balance, blueprint, port, polish and reassemble an engine.

That may have been true in the past, but there are very few jobs (or important decisions) that don't require some awareness of computers today. The critical analysis skills that enable one to wade through the masses of info in our everyday environments is absolutely essential, alothough many "computer" people don't have those. So perhaps information literacy goes far beyond hawrdware/software
