Computer has been freezing using IE lately...

The last couple days my computer has been freezing a lot lately when I am viewing webpages. It happened numerous times on AnandTech forums where I get to choose which forums to go to. Just a minute ago, I went to General Hardware and then went back and then clicked 'Off Topic' and it froze. All I had running was ICQ and that one IE window. It's only been a few months after a format and it only freezes when I use IE (so far). I have a 366@550 but I don't think that would be the problem. I just got done playing a hour or so of Counter-strike, and it never locks up there. Am I just having bad luck with Windows?

I've got exactly the same problem. When it freezes the only thing that still moves is the mouse cursor but you can't click on anything and the keyboard is nonresponsive.

Hmm. Mine is a complete freeze. Nothing on kb works, no mouse movement, and my mp3s stop playing. Can anyone help?

Which version of IE do you have? Mine used to lock up but i could move the mouse with IE5.0 but since i downloade and started using IE5.5 it totally locks up without any movement. microsoft products suck. They don't even deserve a capital letter in front of thier name.

I have the exact same problem! This only happens when my Voodoo5 is in my computer. It is driving me nuts, I have replaced everything in my system and tested it in other computers and everything is OK, even the Voodoo5. I can easily reproduce the freeze by going through the forums and after a while the only thing that responds is the mouse, but it can't click on anything. It happens in Netscape as well as IE.
It only happens in 2D, and never in 3D. I am about to explode, I spent over 7 hours troubleshooting this. Troubleshooting can be fun, but sometimes I just want my Ö¶ÅYÒ§"$ computer to work.

Aureal SQ2500 sound card
Abit BE6 motherboard
Linksys LNE100TX network card
IBM 75GXP 45GB HD
256MB RAM
Win98SE
650MHz Pentium III FCPGA using an Abit Slotket
Full Tower Case 300W Antec PS
52x Creative Labs CDROM
Floppy Drive
Dust scattered about

I just reinstalled Windows fresh and it is still doing it. I hate Microsoft. I hate it a lot. I wouldn't use their products if I wasn't addicted to Evercrack.

I can easily reproduce the freezing by going to any long message in the forums and scrolling up and down until the only thing that moves is the mouse.

Alboroth, my problem also started with Netscape. I was about to try another clean reinstall but now I think I'll wait a while.

Hmm, didn't know I wasn't alone! I'm using the IE that comes with Win98SE which is just IE 5.0 (5.00.2614.3500, heh). I guess I can't do anything about it but it is odd that it worked fine for months and I haven't had trouble until now. Thanks for all replies though.

I had the problem with 98SE when I first got my cable modem. And it only happened when I clicked on a link and it took longer than normal to retrieve it. If the page came back right away, no problem. But, if it was trying to find the site, my computer would lock up for 1 second every 6-7 seconds or so.

Doesn't happen anymore, perhaps it is a modem/nic issue.

I have the same problem where it will stop responding for about 20 seconds every minute or 2 and it PISSES ME OFF!!! If you click a link it will just sit there no matter how many times you click, so I stop clicking and like 20-30 seconds later it starts going again and works for a couple minutes then does the same thing again.

Anyway I have found a way to fix it. Install Internet Connection Sharing and the problem seems to disappear.

And more than likely it is a tcp/ip problem cause it doesn't happen in win2k but then again I think 2k installs ICS by default so who knows.

good luck as I know how frustrating this is.

I don't know if I added Dynamic HTML binding. Some talk about it freezes for a bit but then it works. But mine is just freezing and I have to press restart. I didn't mean to say it only lock's up when I click a link, that was just an example. It hasn't locked up since I first posted this thread (yah!). I'll try installing ICS if it keeps up.

I installed Internet Connection Wizard and now the problem seems to be gone. Rest assured that if this freezes again I will post here.
Why did this work? Aaaah... my head hurts... it only happened with my Voodoo5 installed, but you other guys have completely different systems. Aaaah! I have to lie down. Maybe I will just blame Microsoft again and feel better. Yes, I'll do that.

Aboroth,

:D haha you tell me it's just one of those things but believe you me my head hurt too until ICS.

I think it's because supposively ICS puts your modem and tcp/ip stack behind it and everything goes through ICS. That's what I heard anyway but I had thought that I was the only one having this problem so this post was like a bottle of advil ;)
