I recently built a new machine using the Abit KT7 board, Sound Blaster Live audio, and a Matrox G400 graphics card. I originally loaded 98Se but the system kept hanging just after windows would complete its load. The background came up, sound came on, and then the mouse would freeze and I would have to reset the machine to get into safe mode to fix the problems.
Got tired of fighting Se and moved up to WinME with all the latest drivers. I started loading the system under the audit mode in ME and loaded card/driver items one by one to test to see if certain cards had problems. All loaded fine until I installed the LiveWare 3.0. Finally got tired of the Sound Blaster issues and purchased a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. Seems to be running more stable.
Now the only time it hangs on me is when I play games (Star Trek Voyager:Elite Force or Pinball). The game loads fine, plays fine, and then when I shut it down it freezes up the system again. Only solution is to shut down for 20 minutes and then restart. I've tried to restart after the hang but the system hangs right off the bat once Windows is done loading... Seems to be the same issue as in 98Se. I don't have any problems loading or playing MP3, mpeg, or any video type files, only games (some resize the window settings).
I have also noticed the hang problem in NetMeeting. I have a USB camera and when I increase the window size to 200% or better on both windows (what I am receiving as well as my window) the system hangs and then needs the 20 minute shut down.
Main Questions:
1) Is this a motherboard/graphics card compatibility issue?
2) Why does the system need 20 minutes to fix whatever the problem is after shutting down?
System Specs:
AMD Thunderbird 850MHz
Micron 256MB PC-133 RAM
ABIT KT7 with KT7UL BIOS patch
VIA 4-in-1 4.28Beta
Matrox G400 32MB with PowerDesk 6.21
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Intel Pro DSL Modem (internal)
Generic 56k modem in ISA slot (no drivers installed)
