Computer hangs when playing video files

ugh

Platinum Member
Hi folks,

My friend is having a very odd problem where the whole PC hangs when playing vid files using either WMP or RealPlayer. Any other program he uses is fine. PC has been working flawlessly for ~1 year until recently. He even reformatted the PC and changed the vid card fan but to no avail.

Machine specs as follows:

Mobo: ASUS A7V600-X
Vid: GF2MX (dunno what brand)
CPU: AXP2100+

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Wait a minute. He re-formatted and installed the OS clean and it STILL does this? I can't imagine why, unless he installed something after the re-install that caused the problem.

After a clean install it shouldn't do that, no matter what caused it.

Only other common denominator would be the video or audio driver. Sometimes the latest is not the best.

Grasping at straws my next suggestion would be to try a different video card. Also reset all BIOS settings to their safe defaults (maybe he did some tweaking like increasing his AGP aperature which can cause all kinds of problems).

Yups, strange as it may seem; the darn PC still hangs. He'll try a diff vid card when he gets home tonite. But I'm all outta ideas what could be causing the PC to hang... Unless his vid card is already fried after he fitted the new fan.
