About 2 months ago...My computer started freezing randomly in windows xp. While playing games, browsing or just checking emails. It didnt matter. CTRL+ALT+DEL worked and trying to kill the process which was not responding would cause explorer to hang. Trying to tell windows to restart or shutdown would then cause everything to freeze up. However in the meantime, all programs running in the background seem to be performing their duties ok.

I would be forced to press the restart button manually. After restarting, just after the windows xp loading animation, the screen would turn black. I would be forced to restart continuously and the problem would continue. Trying to start Safe Mode results in the same blank screen. I noticed that after I left the computer off for an hour or so, the problem would go away and I was able to start the computer normally (which leads me to believe its a hardware issue). The problem would return randomly a few times in a day. I decided to format and get rid of my RAID 0 setup to see if that would resolve the issue. I did this about 3 weeks ago and since then, the problem seems to have gone away until today. The same symptoms have returned.

Could this be a cooling issue (due to the fact that I leave it off for a short period of time and i'm able to use it again?), memory, PSU or hd failure? My specs are listed below...

Intel C2D E6600
2GB RAM
2x75GB Western Digital Raptors
1xSeagate 320GB
EVGA 8800GTX

All stock cooling. I've had the system for about 9 months now and it has seen hotter days.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated...Thank you in advance.

What power supply?

I would first try running memtest86 on your computer to see if there are issues with it.

thanks soundman, I missed that but need more info. I guess you rather go back to making assumptions about problems, than do what a real tech does.
