computer hangs for a few seconds

I bought a new computer for my wife recently. During Everquest 2 it hangs for about 3 seconds sometimes. there's no odd noise, or change in screen, except the screen if frozen for that short time, the sound still plays though.

It doesn't happen often, maybe once every couple days, but still curious what would cause this.

specs are:

Studio XPS - 435 Tower( 475 watt PSU )Processor: Intel Core i7-920

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit1 TB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM) 3.0Gb/s, 32MB Cache12 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz (6 DIMMs)16X DVD ROM Drive
16X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability1 GB ATI Radeon HD 5870Dell 1525 Wireless-N PCIe CardI recently got drivers for the wireless card because it was showing up in the device manager, but have not tested gaming since. I don't use the wireless card, but, could that have caused it?

nothing on the computer is overclocked, its actually a dell so that's all locked anyway.

If you need more information just let me know, thanks.

I had a similar issue which was caused by a driver problem. Try reinstalling drivers for the following devices:

Motherboard chipset
LAN card
Sound card
Video card
Wireless (if you have it)

I reinstalled all those, I'll test it out over the next few days to see if it works, thanks.

I realized though, when I first got the computer I had to update my bios because my i7-920 was only being recognized as 1 core. After updating it was being recognized and running properly, but this was after I had already installed all my other drivers, could that have been the cause?

It's possible - hard to say though :/

don't think its internet lag, when that happens in eq2 the video is still responsive, you can move around, just what you click doesn't really happen on the server. When this happens the screen actually freezes, mouse included.

So far so good though, played for about 8 hours on it so far and no problems yet.

ok, so this problem still occurs it seems, took about 15 hours of use, and it hung for maybe 3 seconds so its not a big deal anyway, but..

NEW PROBLEM:

After the computer sits idle for about 30 minutes or more, its frozen when I get back. This started happening after I disabled sleep mode which was on by default. It does not happen if I let it go into hibernation, or leave a program running. Could this be related to the original problem, what could be the causes?
