Computer Hangs After Startup

so my computer's given me sh!t ever since the day i bought it and now, it refuses to boot into windows. after POST and the Windows XP splash screen w/ the loading bar, my monitor turns off saying it doesn't receive a signal and my mouse also turns off. my keyboard is also unresponsive. there could be something wrong with my master boot record or something because my computer's been through 10 power surges in the last 2 weeks. what do you guys think the problem is?

edit: i am typing this post in safe mode...so i can boot into safe mode.
edit 2: i used msconfig to add "/basevideo" to my boot.ini and it worked. weird.
