I'm pulling every single strand of hair now. My PC hangs every 30 mins and I can no longer overclock it at all. I'm wondering if the PSU is the fault. It did not state that it was AMD CERTIFIED and it's 300watts. What are the symptons of a pc that has insufficient power?

insufficient power will probably cause random restarts and total freezes (when you say it hangs, is it like a 5 second hang or do you have to hard restart?). also, did this problem happen out of nowhere or is this a newly built computer or did you just change the configuration...

Everything was alright when I first built the machine and overclocked it. I installed win98 and everything was fine at 900Mhz@1.75V. Then I tried WinME. Problems started, hanging as in FREEZE. Then I decided to reformata nd reinstall winME. This time, it hangs during INSTALLATION WITH A BLUE SCREEN saying this address bla bla bla. Now it does that all the time even though I set my settings to the slowest in the BIOS. :(

Now tell me what is the point of saving $40 on a chip to get all the headaches to run a simple system.Intel is the road of painless computering.of course you want beleave me so put your 4 in 1 driver in and try again :).

How does the CPU temp look? Do you have the ability to monitor the mainboard temp as well? Overheating is a very common cause of lockups, but 30 minutes seems a bit long for this to be the case. Worth a look though.

Try putting 98 on there again, or force all of your drivers. Maybe WinMe is autodetecting something wrong?

If it worked fine with 98, then you probably don't have a PS problem.

Insufficienyt power = random restarts, normally. I've never heard of hard freezes as a result of PS problems.

You said you're getting BSOD in the install; check your RAM. Is that 256 in 2 sticks or 1? Try 1 at a time or try other RAM. Check the chip itself, see if there's any damage. I've heard of cracked chips acting that way (as they heat up, the cracks expand & cause all kinds of weird problems).

I get random lockups too, currently looking for a solution.
I get lockups mostly during:
* Auto-Cadd
* 3d Gaming (Mainly 3dmarks and the new Dino Isle demo (WAY COOL))
* Digital Video Capturing
* CD Burning

Planned steps to take:

1) I have 2 128 meg sticks of ram, am going to run on one, then the other for a while.

2)My old CD-Rom is acting flaky anyway, SO I plan on taking it out (would remove any Power Supply Issue I might have) to lower the load.

3) Underclocking P3 750 CPU to 495 to see if maybe my cpu isnt getting proper cooling (have a generic dual fan).

Any other ideas for narrowing down the problem?

When my computer went psycho on me and began ramdomly locking up, I wiped out my hard drive clean about 3 times. It turned out that it was my RealTek NIC that was the source. I even updated the drivers for it and the computer still locked up. So I replaced it with an Intel NIC and have had no random lock ups since.
