Is anyone familiar with the International Academy of Design in Toronto?

I have a relative who is interested in getting education in computer graphics design. He hopes to get job at the end of it. He is not sure yet whether he wants to do illustation, digital image/video editing, web page design or what. The school is pretty expensive. A nine month programme is about C$14,000 before books etc. They claim a high placement rate (85%) after graduation.

Any thoughts on whether this is worthwhile? Alternatives? My relative isn't a natural outgoing salesman so I don't think that he wouldn't do too well just learning the stuff at home and trying to freelance. WHat is this business like? Can you get a salary position or is it mostly contract work?

Thanks for any suggestions or opinions.

That is a very very good program.
I have a few friends in it.
I personally do not believe in traditional school for the high tech industry.
But of course if you have no experience, it will help alot.

Thanks SammySon,

I would really like to hear more about your friends' experiences at this school. Do they expect a good chance of job placement when they graduate? Are the facilities & computers there state-of-the-art? Do they use MACs or PCs? Do you have to have your own computer & software at home or can you get good access to the school's computers?

If you or your friends wish, please feel free to email me with any info. I appreciate your post.

Along with placement rates, ask to see the breakdown of salaries the graduates are getting. The school should have that information.

I agree with kranky...Ga Tech advertises a very high placement rate for its graduates (and they definitely follow through with proof of this) though some of their students make much less per year than those who attended Cal Tech, MIT, etc.

Thanks for your replies. I checked out Sheridan but they seem to offer more fine art programmes or ecommerce.

Anyone working in the digital design business? What training did you get and how did you get started?
