Computer going REALLY slow

This just started out of nowhere today. My computer is going really really slow, so slow that I can't really do anything on it and the hard drive is constantly reading. I tried to run hijack this and kaspersky but I'm not able to. An AOLHostManager.exe box keeps popping up and if I look at the processes, the same AOLHostManager.exe is there and it keeps increasing.

I'm not sure what to do as I can't really do anything on the computer unless I go into safe mode, and that is limited.

Can you upload the offending AOLHostManager.exe file to VirusTotal.com and see if it's identified as malware? If it is, please post the results?

Also, rename the hijackthis.exe file to something else and try running it again. If it runs, post the complete logfile if you want. Any suspicions on what caused all this, btw?

This was all done in safe mode so I'm not sure if that affects anything. I'm not sure what caused this. The only thing I think I clicked on a popup by accident.

Ugh, Vundo infection :( Is it an option to back up your files and then do a factory reinstall of Windows, install apps and restore your files & configuration? If so, keep that in mind, because it'll definitely kill the infection.

Otherwise, you might want to try out John's malware-removal guide and Schadenfroh's automated malware-removal utility, and also dump your HijackThis logfile into http://hijackthis.de for analysis, note the items that need killed, and then reboot into Safe Mode and remove them with HJT.

For future reference, it's possible to mitigate a heck of a lot of security risks by using the OS's available capabilities, patching all software including third-party stuff (Flash Player, etc), and avoiding risk as much as practical, and with that in mind... http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security2.html

edit: I plunked the log into the analyzer and I suspect this entry is a bad one, although the analyzer thinks it may be OK:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ekpwu] "C:\Documents and Settings\V Patel\Application Data\M?crosoft\n?pdb.exe"

Is that anything you recognize?
