Ok, has anyone ever had their computer try to get online by its self? Mine will ever once and a while just try and dial up my isp. I have no idea why, but its done it a bunch of times and is becoming really annoying when I am playing a game to have it crash back to desktop to show me my dial up screen. The best part is, if i let it get online it dials up my isp and then just sits there. So its not Windows Me tring to get updates like I first thought. Please help

it could be other programs that are looking for updates...

such as an antivirus software.. or just your windows task scheduler..

um.. to tell you the truth. I have no clue.. it all depends on what you are rnning..

try uninstalling items that chooses the auto update and try disabling it..

or if dialing up is a problem get broadband....

You could download and install ZoneAlarm firewall (free download from Zone Labs). This can tell you what application is trying to access the internet by alerting you when it tries, and you can either allow it access to the net or deny it. This might help you narrow it down so that you don't have to go uninstalling stuff in a "trial and error" manner.

hehe... it's the cyber ghost. it goes from computer to computer through the world wide web.

but u can block this ghost from getting out of your computer or into your computer by installing a firewall.

I don't know if this will help, but you can check and see what your settings are for internet explorer. More specifically check to see if it's set up to "dial whenever a network connection is not present". I've seen that setting be the culprit in numerous cases.

hope this helps

its almost always b/c of some program you have running.. like chat clients, updating software.

There's always the simplest solution of them all.... unplug the phone cord, or turn off the computer : )

My Prodigy connection used to do that all the time.
It's the Internet service providers files that seem to take control.
I switched to cable and all symptems disappeared.
