I don't mock people for liking to play videogames, I was once an avid gamer myself. I think a big difference for me is having somethiing that you can share with people. If you learn guitar, it's cool...you can play for other people and everyone enjoys it. You have something to show for all those hours you spent. But with videogames, you have nothing to show for it. "Hey, watch me beat this zombie!" Meh...

But again, I don't rip on gamers. It's a skill in its own respect, and you should just do what you like without worrying about how it looks to others.

you do have something to show to people. The difference is, most people appreciate music and think they know all about it compared to games. Most people don't care or aren't impressed for some reason.

BTW, a lot of guys go into music to attract girls.
Yes, because this is 1992 and will always be 1992 regardless of the progression of time.

I think spending 12-14 hours a day playing WoW is a bit excessive. I like playing games, but I have other hobbies. I like fast cars, shooting handguns, music, and a variety of other things that aren't "nerdy" but regardless of what anyone thinks I don't mind to set aside a couple of hours for gaming if I don't have anything else to do. It's certainly healthier than shooting up...less expensive, too. Er, wait...maybe not. 🙂

Yes, but if you have 12-14 hours a day to play WoW, then your life is a tad different then everyone else's anyways. You can be perfectly social on a friday night, get up saturday, play for 10 hours, then do something saturday night, then play for another 12 on sunday VERY easily. I'm not talking about boozing or partying necessarily, but just something.

I think you will find that anybody who is really into any hobby is a nerd/geek. A hobby is supposed to be enjoyable but should also be mixed with other activities. Walk a dog, fly a kite, ride a bike etc...

Getting older I play less PC games (used to put in several hours a day most days) b/c I now sit in front of a PC all day at work. Now I prefer console gaming in short intervals.

No, it's not any different from any other hobby. It is also usually connected with other hobbies like do-it-yourself pc building and configuring, case modding, etc.

I once saw a tv show about a group of guys who were involved in a hobby where they constructed R/C boats from scratch with real spring or gas propelled pellet guns mounted on them. These boats were very elaborate reconstructions of various warships that must have cost quite a bit build. What did they do with these ships, you ask? They plunked them into a shallow pond and drove them around shooting at each other until only one boat or team of boats remained floating. It was a GAME, and it also was a respected HOBBY. Chess is a GAME and it also is a HOBBY.

So we accept that games can be hobbies, but we hang up on whether the game is played on a board, in the water, or on a computer? Or are we hanging up on the how we can play chess against someone who is sitting across a park bench from us, where computer games can be played across continents via the internet?

What about LAN parties then? These people who come by the thousands lugging their computers and waiting in line just to do this thing in the presence of other people can't be totally disregarded. Computer gaming has all the aspects of a serious hobby, why don't we go ahead and call it one?

It is "called" a serious hobby, it is just not respected in the public eye. That is my point 🙂

LAN parties are so much fun... I haven't been to one in awhile, but people think gaming isn't social... they haven't been to a "gaming party" (I'm using this instead of LAN party cause one doesn't associate consoles with LAN parties much, or at least I don't) where people are yelling/taunting, laughing at what's going on and having a generally good time while doing something that's relatively harmless.

Gaming still has a bit of astigmatism that goes with it, but that's going away as gaming becomes more and more mainstream. Although, with crap flying around like "video games are violent!", there'll always be people who degrade the games.

I honestly hope that we progressed beyond stereotypes and labelling, but it's too much ingrained in us. It exist today as much as it exist in the past.
