I have a Compaq Presario Pentium 3 - 966Ghz. I had the HD replace a couple of years ago. Everything was working until I woke it from sleep the other day. I can't click on anything. If I click the start menu nothing happens. If I hold the cursor over it, I get the "click here to begin". If I hit the windows key on the keyboard nothing happens.

When I restart it I get a message about one of my drives needing to be checked for consistency. When it does it stops at 99% and then freezes. When I try putting the XP Upgrade disc in and try a repair, it does the same thing. I type CHKDSK. It gets to 99% then freezes. I'm not sure if that means the HD is going or if it is something else. If it's not, is there anything I can try to get it working again?

The last time my HD went I think it wouldn't get past the start up screen. So I'm hoping it's not the HD this time. If it is is there anything I can do to get stuff off it?

Check to see if SMART drive is enabled in the bios. If it is then that might alert you via error message that a pending failure is about to occur. If you are sure the drive is failing either copy the files over a network or slave the drive up to another system. Definitely don't use USB to copy as it would be USB 1.1 in that system (11mb/s) and I wouldn't burn cds either unless you absolutely have no choice. Good luck.

not too sure about that one, how long are you waiting at 99%? Let it go over night or something. Perhaps its reallocating bad sectors or something and it might take some time.
