Computer Fried?

I just put a new processor and motherboard into my computer at home and had it working last weekend, well when i headed back to college i left it at home for the week. When i got home tonight i noticed that my computer was on. My dad had apparently turned it on and was going to use it but when seen he needed a password just left it on. He said it loaded up into windows and everything like its suposta, but when i got back it was just a black screen and and the monitor was in the power down setting it goes into when there is no imput. He said no one touched it after he turned it on. So i turned it off on with the power switch in back and when i tried to turn it back on nothing.. well the fans turned and i could hear my harddrives spinning and all, but it never beeped. My first thought was that something burned up insided, but i talked to my parents who said they never smelt anything burning and when i looked on the mobo and cpu they looked just fine. (Not that i know what a fried CPU or Mobo look like, but there was nothing obvious or suspious looking) So i tried taking everything apart and putting it back together since i had no idea what else to do and that didnt fix anything. I tried starting it with the bare bones ( cpu, mobo, heatsink, and ram) and that did the same thing. I also tried an extra cpu i got from a friend, but im not sure if that one works to begin with so.... that didnt really rule anything out.

Someone please help me before i take a baseball bat to this thing. (and no i will not post a movie of it) I have been having problem after problem with this damn thing.
 
What brand & model of power supply is/was running the show there? *casually distracts WisMan with a pizza and hides baseball bat*
 
So a sort of generic brand, then. Do you have any other standard ATX power supplies you could use to do that barebones test with?
 
If you can afford to get a new one, Antec is a good brand and easy to find at Staples, CompUSA, etc. Maybe a nice new Antec SmartPower SL400? Can Santa be lobbied at all? 😀

Also, if there was any lightning activity in the area, try bypassing your surge supressor as a fact-finding step. Maybe it got struck. And if you didn't try clearing the motherboard's CMOS yet, that's worth a shot too... unplug the computer, remove the CMOS battery, move the Clear CMOS jumper for about 20 seconds like your manual shows, then put the battery back in and plug the computer back in.

So you think its the PSU? There shouldnt have been any lighting, i never seen any in wisconsin in the month of december anyway. Oh, and i already reset the cmos, acutally did it right away, just forgot to add that in my inital post.

Santa would undoubtibly say no considering the fact he already bought me my sony 17" lcd screen =/ oh well cant really complain

(went bowling to relieve some anger and rolled a 189 my best ever, so that made the day suck a little less)

Thank for the ideas though.
 
Any of your pals have a self-built rig with a standard ATX PSU in it (read: not a Dell) that they might be so kind as to let you try, as a fact-finding step?
