Computer frequently pauses, waits for HD to spin

This frequently happens when going from one application to another. The computer pauses, then I hear the hard drive start spinning(2 sec), then back to normal. It never used to be like this. I currently use 2 physical HD's.

I was looking through power saving options in Windows, ( I have windows 7) but I didn't see a power saving option for hard drives. I don't remember changing any of this.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Give more info.mobo.cpu.psu.rams.video card.and hdd.
and this sounds like HDD starting to give up.but with more info would be better to help you.

Sorry, here's my specs

Motherboard - Gigabyte AM2+
CPU - AMD x4 3ghz
Ram - 4 GB
VC - Gigabyte 9600GT
HD#1 - WD 700GB Black
DH#2 - Seagate 1TB

FYI Win 7 definately does have an option to keep the hard drives fired up - try 'high performance' in the presets, or modify it if you have to - I think even high performance shuts them down after a couple of hours.

Also is this a recent install of Win 7? If so it'll be software... if not... denis280 might be right and it's dying a slow death. It happens. But hey HDDs are cheap these days and you could get yourself a terabyte easy 🙂

hey, my hard drive shut off was set to 20 min. Is that the default? That's probably the cause. I didn't see the advanced options button on the power savings screen. Thanks

My HDDs never stop spinning. Set your power off option to NEVER.
