Computer Freezing

Recently my computer has been freezing
It started after i got a new motherboard. With my old motherboard i could only have 256RAM CAS2 now i can put 384 CAS2 (256CAS2 + 128 CAS3)
I checked my cpu temp...athlon 800mhz...and it was 58C...which is crazy

I got a new heatsink and now it doesn't go above 41C in any circumstance.

However, after putting the new motherboard and more RAM my computer has been locking up more....it has happened twice (downloading + extracting) since i replaced the heat sink and like 4 times before i replaced it. With the old motherboard it happened maybe 5 times a year.

What could be causing this problem?

Windows XP Corp
384 ram
30 gig HD
geforce 2 gts vid card


What are the possible solutions?

It may be a RAM CAS issue. Knock it back to CAS3 or remove the 128mb CAS3 stick.

you sure?

would knocking is back to cas3 make it slower then 256 alone at cas2
btw...i used this 128meg ram before i got the 256 on the old mobo at cas2 with no problems

Try flashing the BIOS to the latest version... my computer was freezing before too, and after flashing the BIOS it went away for good...

before you flash your bios, try removing the 128 stick, because you are running it out of spec it could cause instability, even if it worked okay before.

If you do flash your bios, you need to go to your MB manufacturer's web site, look under support/drivers etc... and download the bios flashing program. Then follow instructions for program.

The biggest risk: if the power goes out while you are flashing your bios, you could loose the board.

I agree, slow down the memory timings. That sounds exactly like the problem.

I agree with the memory timings. And as for the temp change you noticed, I also noticed an increase of reported cpu temp after I upgraded one of my systems with this board. I'm not sure if its a real increase, or just the way the board monitors temps.

Every motherboard measures CPU temps in a different way... they either have different locations for temp sensors or different algorithms for calculating the CPU temp...

so it is common that you see different temps after u change mobos...
