A friend just overclocked 1.2 Tbird to 1.45. The overclocking seemed to go well until we tried to play Empire Earth, when his computer froze on him. Upon reboot it gave him a message (something to this effect): "The system crashed because the display device could not complete draw in. Please check your device manufacturer's website for a device update." We returned the computer to it's original clock speed (or, more accurately, the speed he had been running at since he first got the computer (10 x 133 ). We tried reinstalling ATI drivers, didn't help. We tested DirectX (using it's diagnostics). I don't know where to go to find the XP directX, or i would have tried reinstalling that. Nothing has helped. It still gives him the error.

Any ideas?

His system:
1.2@1.33 (10x133)
Iwill kk266
198 mb PC133 RAM
40 gig Maxtor HDD
30 gig Maxtor HDD
Radeon LE (unlocked to Radeon DDR with Radeon DDR drivers installed)

Also he has used most of this stuff in his old computer (PIII 600) and even the unlocked radeon had no problems and he hasn't changed any settings. It also worked up until he overclocked, and we haven't been able to get it working again.

[EDIT] He just tried CS, and it works, but that's in OpenGL. I have a feeling he has some issues with D3D but i dont know how to fix em[/edit]

Thanks,
Beau (Liquidninja is the friend btw, he may stop in and see what's up)

Have you tried uninstalling the card and using a different card in the system?

No, but it works in OpenGL, just not in D3D... Does anyone know how to reinstall D3D stuff?

How would you uninstall DirectX? I'm using WinXP, and you can't download 8.1 from microsofts site (for XP). Does anyone know how to do this?

direct x uninstall is impossible without a little freeware program floating around that will clean up its many trails for you...Sorry I don't know the name...

I recommend reinstalling same version or newer if you have issues...That should fix any problems...

< Radeon LE (unlocked to Radeon DDR with Radeon DDR drivers installed) >

Were you ocing this like many le owners do??? I know I did...Thele lacks a active cooling fan on chipset and those prolonged ocing can damage the gpu...just a thought.

If it still happening at the default cpu speed it most likely wasn't the ocing of the cpu.
