Just random freezes, happens anytime I try to defrag or do a virusscan but does not freeze when playing games.

Anyone know a program that I can run in the back ground that can track maybe whats causing it to freeze?

thanks in advance

also wanted to say that it just stops responding even though things like my audio keeps working. I have my cable box plugged into my audigy 2 audio in port and it keeps going fine.

As someone else said above, it might be a good idea to check your CPU temp while your computer is running... let people here know what it reads so they can give you some advice.

42C for the CPU
57C for the GPU

the PSU is a Sparkle 500 w/ a decent 12V rail.

Doesn't explain why it plays games fine for hours but locks up in windows

side note- your comp has frozen in the middle of a defrag? you might want to look into that, because i have seen wierd things happen to a system that was quazi-defraged. ive found its not completely noticable at first but just look out for it

EDIT: update scanners, boot to safe mode and do virus/spyware/etc scans. the fact that it craps out whenever you try to do a virus scan sounds like something trying to prevent you from being able to remove it.

but it also locks up just surfing, and spyware scans work 50% of the time and find nothing.

I had did a chkdsk and found 4 bad sectors which isn't too obscene.

Check Event Viewer in Administrative Tools and it will list the problem. May give a cryptic message, but usually is a good lead into what program/service/action is causing issues.

Can you boot into safemode? If you can boot into safemode and see if it freezes up also. If it still freezes up it most likely a hardware issue.

I booted into safe mode and ran a scan and it found nothing
I then did a defrag

then when I rebooted the computer won't get past the initial post
I went into the bios and downclocked the processor and tried again, still no windows
I then tried to go into the bios again and it would just freeze

I cracked the case and reset the bios jumper
restarted and got into the bios
made some minor tweaks but left the processor and memory timings alone
rebooted and it went into windows

I'm guessing this is heat related as it has been hot in my city for the last couple weeks
perhaps I'll run default for awhile until it starts to cool down again

I'll update this more when I find out anything else
