Computer Freezes

Well guys,

I'm not really sure where to start describing my problem. I purchased a Shuttle SB61G2 last year before school started and it's worked flawlessly up until now. I'm not sure if specs will help, but I've got a p4c 2.8, ti4200 vid card, audigy 2 sound card, 1gb of ram and a 120gb hdd.

Basically whats happening, is that the computer starts up fine, and once the little music for win xp goes off, 1 of 3 things will happen:

1. Everything will work fine.

2. The computer will freeze up and you can do nothing except cut off the power.

3. A screetching sound will come out of my speakers, network cable will be detected as unplugged, but the computer will function other than that.

I've tried reseating all of my cards/ram, but havent done so to the proc yet. If anyone has any advice at all it would be much appreciated!

Does it boot OK (and consistently) in safe mode?

If so, take out the sound card and reboot in normal mode, does it boot OK (and consistently) now?

Does Safe Mode start without an issue? Press F8 when booting and enter Safe Mode. Have you changed anything at all, hardware/software/drivers which coincided with this problem occuring?

Are you more likely to get problems if the PC has been on for a while? Is XP updated to the latest patch level and do yuo have anti-virus/firewall updated and running?

Does it boot OK (and consistently) in safe mode?

thanks for all the suggestions!

I've tried the safe mode suggestion several times now, it seems to work without a hiccup!

So i guess that means my problem is one of my drivers/ my sound card?

Should I try just pulling out the soundcard and seeing if that fixes the problem or what?

Oh, I have updated windows to the most current thing they will give me, I use Sygate personal firewall (zone alarm would cause my pc to freeze when using bittorrent), and I have Symantec Antivirus.

oh, I forgot to answer 1 question....nothing has changed recently, my computer has had the same components since day 1.

I'd remove the soundcard as dclive suggested and let us know what happens

it appears that the problem does lie in the sound card. I guess now I'm just wondering why it decided to go on the blink all the sudden.

On the bright side though , thank you all very much for your help!

At least it's a cheap(ish) component to replace with not a lot of hassle - you might want to try reinstalling the drivers or trying different driver revisions just in case though.
