almost all of the kazaa lites out there now are bogus, unless you get the really old version of kazaa lite. Because kazaa lite was a copy right infringement, the name was never patented and many spoof kazaa lites exist now. They are just as bad, if not worse, than kazaa media desktop. Be sure to have
winsockfix (incase your net connection dies) on your PC and run
kazaa begone (best run in safe mode).
Please, take

Neither one of us are here to cast judgement on the concept of file sharing. We will, however, try to steer you away from applications that are a threat to your system. About a year and a half ago, Kazaa Lite was an acceptable spyware-free replacement for Kazaa. Since then, Kazaa and Sharman industries went to court and won a copywrite infringement case against the Kazaa Lite name and its developers. That was followed up by cease and desist orders to the sites that offered the software.
I'm the guy who's curious though .... keep in mind that I have 2 systems completely isolated from each other. When I come across questionable software, I'll download it to my other system to see if its safe .... and if its not, what I can do to fix it. About two weeks ago, the safety issue about Kazaa Lite was brought to my attention. I downloaded a copy .... scanned the compressed archive (it passed), then proceeded to install it. My AV software went off, telling me that I had been infected with a back door trojan. Now, I'm pretty good at manual removal of malware related issues. However, in this case, I had my own problems. So, my solution ended up being the last resort .... I reformatted and did a clean install. (No biggie on this sytem since it has no valuable information.)
I will tell you this. As long as you engage in file sharing activities, you will be putting yourself at risks to exploitation. However, if you must share your files .... there are much safer alternatives to Kazaa/Kazaa Lite! The following list of programs are spyware free .... but keep in mind you can still
EASILY be infected just by using their networks.
DC++
WinMX
Emule
mIRC (trialware, network is full of exploits of all nature. Not recommended by me!)
Let me reinforce that they are NOT free of dangers .... just free of spyware hidden in its software. Also, I don't intend this to be an "all inclusive list" .... just a few examples.
Ok, enough of the "history lesson" and back to the problem.
By all means, follow
Schadenfroh's instructions. Print them out if you have to and DO THEM FIRST before you proceed with my own recommendations.
After running KazaaBgone, download, install, and update spybot S&D (If you prefer Add-aware SE, thats fine too). Close out all browser windows and then proceed with its scan. When its done, click the "fix" button and have it remove all those entries marked in red. This is also best done in safe-mode. Next, reboot your system, download HijackThis from
HERE. Install it in its own directory like C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. It doesn't work right installed on your desktop or left in a temporary file. Don't do anything else at this point other than save the scan results to a log and then copy/post the log into your next post. We'll take a look at the log and make sure we got rid of all your "nasties."
