computer fixer guy whining

When people, especially co-workers, ask if I do side computer work and then ask what I charge, I respond with $100 an hour and they are like, oh, never mind.

Yeah, I would definitely be charging, and just making money from the dipshit's ignorance. Also, if you expect the same to happen in the future, make an image with Ghost or similar, and charge him for 2 hours worth of work the next time, and just image away. At least you get some side cash.

Be kind to fools. You are some kind of fool. All this yammering about overcharging folk and smirking is just a meanness virus folk have caught. Your love drives are all screwed up and you need an emotional reboot.

This is an absolutely true story. You can tell the age based on the subject matter. It happened to me at one of my old firms (I am always the on-site de facto computer guy):

---

The guy opened the Anna Kournikova virus (the e-mail message promised a naked picture of her). I had to spend most of a day fixing the problem.

No sooner were things fixed, than it happened again - by the same person - with the same message and virus file!

Why would he open the same email again?

"I didn't get to see the picture!"

$100 an hour is my way of "nicely" saying I don't want to do it. These things can turn into hours and hours and my free time is worth more than that.

update: it was a virus. he brought it to a nearby shop and apparently it's being fixed at the moment. not sure what he will end up paying

Overcharging? Guy will probably pay a similar amount for lesser service at BB.

That, and the guy is essentially doing the equivalent of putting diesel in a gasoline engine and taking it back to his mechanic, wondering what the problem is. The problem is the idiot operating the damn thing.

Next time he sees that suspicious file, he thinks, "Would it be worth another 100 bucks to get this fixed?" Probably not.

We're all ignit in some way or another and will constantly get screwed. The trick is to screw more than you get screwed 🙂
