computer fields?

just wondering.. i've been thinking too much in the past week about what i want to do with my life.. i know its something to do with computers..

can someone tell me what computer fields are out there that doesnt require "programming" skills like c++ and stuff? how is the avg salary for the fields? please help me out as i am in desperate needs, THANKS!

No clue. I've been willing to learn thing so I haven't had to go into management or anything. 😛

Every job I've had, besides basic tech support ($10-12/hr) has required atleast basic scripting knowledge. So far, I've done (roughly): Support for a proprietary *nix application ($28k/yr, no exp., no degree), network security ($32k/yr start, no exp. no degree), and *nix/network administration ($50k/yr start, no degree).

basic scripting whats that? lol im so sorry i just don't know..

It depends on the job. For me, it was bourne shell scripting. Some perl would have helped out too, but I never got around to it. For windows jobs I'm guessing a little VB wouldn't hurt, and writing simple batch scripts would be very useful, but I've never had a windows admin type job.

n0c since you're in the comp field.. could you ask around a bit for some management stuff please?
like what kinda knowledge you need.. how much money you make and a few things like that? greatly appreciated..

Database Administrator
Network Administrator
System Administrator

You can make a lot of money in any of those careers if you're good at it. Like most jobs though, salary varies a LOT from one geographic area to another.

Database Administrators, at least any real ones, get down and dirty with a LOT of code that manipulates the database ... whether that be Java, C, or just scripting.

As for Network/Systems Administrators, at least for my degree (I'm a Senior now) from a State University for Telecommunications Management, I was required to take 3 programming languages such as C, C++, Java, COBOL, etc. I also had to take a short intro to assembly.

While I'm sure it's possible to get a degree that's computer related without programming, it will be very hard to without touching code from most institutions -- unless if DeVry or some similar college has something that I don't know about.

well i dont mind touching codes.. im sure i'll learn basics but how will i know all that advanced stuff?.... but if you are a adminstrator why would you need to learn how to program for anyways -_-

look at my user name.

ding ding. there's your answer. growing field. you can work almost anywhere.

programming in GIS makes you a hot commodity.

but even if you cannot, you can still find work.

pay ranges (typically) between 30-38k starting out.

the job im at now tops out at 56,000, and i cant program for ****.

I do general tech support in a windows enviroment for 50+k yr (desktop and server suport). took a couple years to get there but I have no degree, just turned a hobby into a career. hope it lasts 🙂

So disappointed. Was expecting links to photographs here, with large open plains covered in Crays and clusters.
