Computer fails to go to sleep and BSODs

Hello guys,
I've run into a severe problem several days ago and am stumped. Would love to see what you guys can make of this. I've been using this PC for 2 years now and it never had problems with going to sleep.

I haven't installed any new drivers recently or made any major system changes (removed Adobe Flash and upgraded QuickTime).

The error that shows up (eventually, after 5 - 10 minutes or so) is DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. What happens is that I put my computer to sleep and my screen turns off, but the fans continue to run. My keyboard and mouse is unresponsive and no keyboard combination works.

When I hard reset the computer, it says that 'Windows has recovered from a serious error' and when I click the 'Check for solution' dialogue, it says that my Ethernet(?!) was responsible for this. It's quite strange though, because this is the first time (happened 4 nights in a row now) in two years that such a problem has appeared.

Would posting any system logs or running any utilities be of any help?

I'm using Windows Vista Business 64 bit if it's relevant.

Thanks in advance.

Troubleshoot an Ethernet networking problem
You received this message because hardware or software on your computer caused Windows to shut down unexpectedly and restart. This is a serious problem, commonly referred to as a stop error or blue screen.

Although the specific cause of this problem is not known, it appears to be related to Ethernet networking.

What is Ethernet?

Ethernet is a networking standard that uses cables to provide network access. It is the most widely installed technology for connecting computers.

To try to solve this problem, follow these steps. One step might solve the problem, but if it doesn't, then go on to the next step.

Steps to solve this problem
Check for updated networking drivers
Run Diagnose and Repair
Collect information about your computer and search Windows Vista Communities for a solution

Steps to work around this problem
Warning
These steps are designed to address a particular problem but might do so by temporarily disabling or removing some functionality on your computer.

Disable Receive Window Auto-Tuning
Disable your Ethernet network adapter

Looking at the link now. It's strange how it says 'Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.' but I'm running Vista SP2 and the hotfix 'KB941858' doesn't show up under the 'Installed Updates' section (Control Panel --> Programs --> Programs and Features --> Installed Updates)

I'll give the hotfix a go now and report back.

I've tried searching online and it appears that other people have pinpointed drivers corruption. Should I look into this? (If so, how? What utility should I run?)

Thanks again.

Since you told us you are running SP2, I am not incredibly surprised you are seeing that message. Can you give us some more details about your computer?

It keeps referring to the Ethernet driver, so you might do well to find a newer version, either through the manufacturer's website or Windows Update.

That fix was included in SP1 already, so if OP has SP2, it's long since patched.

OP: Get WhoCrashed (google...) and install it. Open your minidumps and tell us what it says.

Helpful: Switch to kernel-mode dumps.
