Computer errors/restarts repeatedly

We've had problems with this Hewlett packard
since we bought it 4 years ago. It has been
refortated and fdisked more than a dozen times.
I run scandisk and defrag weekly.
It has never been this bad. We constantly
get explorer errors, internal errors, fatal
exceptions, lockups, windows protection errors,
the computer restores a backup of the registry
2-3 times a day because it says its bad, it
restarts itself constantly, goes into safe
mode constantly. If I knew where to buy a
used system that I could easily transfer all
our files and still have the current programs
that came with the system like Microsoft word
I would do it in a heartbeat. Any ideas or
suggestions besides a hammer.
Thanks Sue:disgust:

Need more input.

What MODEL HP?

What OS are you using?

Are you restoring from an OEM Restore CD or from
and Microsoft Windows CD?

It sounds to me like bad memory or a bad cpu. If you can download a program called memtest86 it can make a bootable floppy disk and check your systems memory. Here is a link.

Memtest86

For the cpu, you might try the lite version of hot cpu. It may tell you if you have cpu issues. Also, is you cpu cooling fan running properly? An over heating cpu will do similar things.
