In terms of Oblivion, a computer with an x1800xt or thereabouts will about equal the graphics of the 360 up to a certgain resolution, like 10x7 or 12x10. Assuming a processor to match like an good a64, x2, or the conroes coming out. Plus 1 or 2 gigs of RAM. That kind of system will be similar to a 360.
It's hard to make a direct comparison, but that will give you a rough idea.

Exactly. And even if you DID have an HD set, I wouldn't count that as part of an XBox 360 purchase. You do more with an HD set than play with an XBox.
If the PC only has to match 640x480 resolution it needs a lot less power than for 10x7 or 1280x1024.Originally posted by: MyStupidMouth

But these comparisons are silly.
Get a job and buy both. I have the HDTV and the nice PC, next will probably be a PS3 since there aren't any Xbox360-only games I want to play.

Then you don't need a PC that can equal the xbox 360, a 6600 (not gt) could likely match its graphics at 640x480.

In terms of graphics...it depends, the xbox 360 is really weak in some ways, and strong in others. Right now most of its games indicate performance of around an x800pro, but theoretically it can have performance about equal to an x1800xt.
So that's what, like $600 to $700 (once you add in case, power supply, memory, etc) to build a comp that can equal the xbox 360?

I cannot believe people are still so narrow-minded. EVERY PC MONITOR OUT THERE CAN BE USED WITH THE 360. There is NO need to add the price of an HDTV. Also, just because the components are somewhat equal means nothing. The Xbox360 is still a dedicated gaming machine. Its GPU will be doing fine for quite a while. Halo 2 was prettier than Halo, was it not? And could a Geforce3 ever render Halo 2's graphics? Don't give me the 480i thing either because you could play it in HD resolution.

And of course you've played both versions?
People still don't get why other people buy consoles. The PS2 wasn't the most successful because of its graphics obviously. It was about the software, most of which never touched a PC.

it has nothing to do with HDTV other than a computer and a console are for two different things and comparing them at a price point is completely silly.
