Computer donations?

I have a friend who works at a school that's badly in need of some new computers. (They currently have 6 laptops with 16MB of memory each -- you get the picture.) Does anybody know where we can find organizations that would be interested in donating some computers to help the school children out? We're not really looking for direct donations from companies and such, rather we'd like to get in touch with organizations that accept donations from companies to distribute these computers among the needy. We're in the Raleigh-Durham area, NC. A quick search on google didn't yield much.

Goodwill? Salvation Army?

Go to various churches and other local charities and ask, at least they'll give you some information

If someone can't give you a specific name, look for a local computer society and they can lead you in the right direction, I'm sure. If you need help with that, just look to see who puts on local computer shows and you'll probably be in the right direction. 🙂

idk, i know since i have so many computers, a girl in my class needed a computer and monitor and her parents couldn't afford it...i gave her a decent pentium 3 with 128MB RAM and windows xp on it.

Salvation army has them for CHEAP. I picked up 6 17" CRT monitors for 10 bucks each.

The computers are mostly PII's and PIII's though.

Might want to check out ebay liquidations. Or call up dell they have special promotions for schools, and HUGE discounts.

As an aside, when last I went to make a donation to Goodwill, the woman vehemently stated that Goodwill only accepts computers less than two years old.

Not certain if this is a new nationwide policy, or not.

yeah our city's library got a donation of computers from mircrosft the only requirement was that it had to be called the "gates" lab. alot of companies will do things like this.

Thanks everybody. I'm looking into Goodwill right now. I'll try Salvation Army or writing a letter to a company if it doesn't work out.
