it says Windows 98 is shutting down... then the monitor turns off, the hdd turns off, but everything else stays on. i think this is where it should display "It is now safe for you to turn off your computer". Is there a way to get this back? or to just make it turn off?

if its an ATX system it should never display "it is now safe to turn off your computer"... rather it should just turn off....

what are your system specs...mobo, psu, etc... it could help to know these things.

Windows 98 doesn't differentiate shutdown modes between Standard PC and ACPI.

If you have any way to get into the bios make sure APM Mode and ACPI are enabled

If its Win98SE then Microsoft has shutdown fix on their website.
For plain Win98 flash latest available BIOS , enable ACPI.

I have roughly the same problem. I'm running Win2K Pro SP2 on my trusty Abit BH6 1.0x system with the latest(but still pretty old) BIOS, and I'm not sure if my ACPI is enabled. However, whenever I try to shutdown my computer(which is seldom since most of the time its on 24/7) it goes to that "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen...

abit motherboards are horrible about shutting down properly. My abit BE6-II would always go to the "now safe to turn off" screen when I shutdown,. barring which OS I had installed, what drivers, acpi enabled, disabled... nothing changed it. I just installed the most recent BIOS...70...I was running XU, the next to the most recent...and now it shuts down properly. I give up.

What's the difference between ACPI and standard mode? Doesn't ACPI have something to do with plug and play?

To get it to turn off automatically go into Control Panel, APM, and turn on Advanced Power Managment. Atleast I think this should work for 98, know it works for 2K and XP, havent used 9x in forever.
