Computer doesn't stay in Standby

I'm trying to have my system go into S3 standby when I'm not using it (summer heat is getting to be too much.) I've got it working fine for 2 of my systems, but my main system always comes right back up after it goes down (in fact, it never shuts the fans all the way off.)

There could probably be other things as well, but I think the first problem is when I go to Mice and other pointing devices in my device manager it lists:

Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse (IntelliPoint)
Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse (IntelliPoint)

even though I only have one mouse. In the power management tab under both the box that says Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is grayed out so I can't check it. Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

I think I might be an issue with the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Receiver. Anyone using one and also experiencing this problem?

I use an MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 and to be honest I think the last time I put my PC in standby was when I was using windows 2000 (though as scary as that sounds, I was using it until christmas, then XP until June and now Vista).

Tell you what, I'll go home and hook up my mouse and set the PC on standby and check those options for you and report back here. It might have something to do with the mouse claiming to have an "always on" feature so that when you start moving it again it doesn't have to wake up - that might prevent it from powersaving?

Being that the mouse is supposed to be able to "wake the PC up" I'm not sure if this will work but:

Go into Device Manager. Double click the mouse. Somewhere in the property tabs there's a checkbox that says "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" or words to that effect. Try that.

n/m Didn't see the edit to your OP. You tried that alredy. 😱 Good luck.
