computer doesn't boot

Over the past year I have been having numerous problems with my computer. And after months and months of on and off debugging I have came to the conclusion that it was the power supply that gave me my problem.

Now that I have a new power supply. My computer sometimes has problems either shutting down or booting up. Sometimes I will go out for 10 minutes and when I come back all I see is a black screen on my computer. Now it can't be the power supply because I had two brand new power supplies and it happened to both. Its not the ram because I have done over 8 hours of memtest with no errors. I have reformatted my computer so there are no viruses. I am starting to think...could it be my hard drive?

My old power supply did fry about a month ago. I am thinking in that time, could it have fried my hard drive?

Usually after a day's rest.. My computer will return to normal. I have no idea why? But my temps read about 45 C, so its not hot.

Any ideas would be appreciative.

Thanks!
Tony

if i leave the computer on long enough, it seems to freeze at the windows xp screen..and then i see the blue screen of death..and then it restarts

sometimes i can boot in..but it takes forever..and it can randomly restart as well..it is definately not the power supply.

Leave your comp on and when the blue screen appears, feel around the mobo and see if any of the chips are burning up or capacitors. Also listen to the hard drive to see if its still functioning, spinning and how hot that is.

the best way to test would be to run a hard drive diagnostic, which you can get from the manufacturer website. if you cant run it on your comp, stick it in someone elses. im pretty sure its the mobo. i dont think a bad hard drive would do that.

well i just took out one of my 2 harddrives and installed an os...everything seems fine now...funny thing is when i had both in there and was running the current hd..it was still slow..but now its okay when i physically disconnect the first hd

What processor are you using?
Describe your equipment in great detail.
What bus frequency are you seeing in the BIOS and what is your multiplier setting?
Exactly what memory do you have in it?
Exactly what CPU do you have in it?

Just as a first step, turn off your machine and remove all cards from it except for the graphics card. Disconnect every disk drive's power connection, except for "c:" drive. Disconnect the power connection for every CD and DVD unit. Power it up and see how it runs in this minimalized condition.

i'm running

HD1 is Western Digital 120 gb 8 mb cache 7400 rpm - has problem i think
HD2 is Maxtor 160 gb 8 mb cache 7400 rpm - works okay

My comp as of right now with everything plugged in except HD1 seems fine. I can format my computer so I assume the mobo doesn't have a problem. When I plug in HD1 and HD2 that's when there is a problem. Could it have something to do with the IDE cable or do u guys think the Western Digital has completely failed? There are no weird noises when I run it..at least I can't hear it due to my case fans that are running.
