Computer doesn't boot to windows

A light switch was hit which cut power to my computer. When I tried to turn it back on, it asked me to choose whether to boot to windows in some type of safe mode, the last settings that worked, or normal boot. I can choose any option, it goes through the windows logo/loading screen thing, and then gives me a BSOD and reboots.

I don't really know what to do here. Intuition tells me that some sector on my hard drive is fried, which is kinda a pain in the ass. If anyone knows of any way that I can fix this, or any utility I can use to run some sort of HDD scan, I'd love you forever for it.

Thanks in advance, friends.

put windows disk in cdrom

try letting it boot with dsk
if it works t,backup data

then enter bios setup (press del ) etc during boot
select boot from cdrom 1st

repair or reformat windows with disk

So, I'm likely not going to have to buy a new HDD/lose all of my data? That's fantastic, my heart's slowed down. I guess that I've learned the importance of backups, if anything.

Is there any actual problem with my HDD? Or is it just with windows XP?
