Computer does not start

Hello, thanks for trying to help.

I'm in need of a few troubleshooting tips.

I built this computer about 2 years ago. It has an Intel dual core processor, MSI motherboard and thermaltake PS. RAM is crucial.

I came home 2 days ago and the computer was off (I always leave it on). When I try to start it, all the fans just barely start to spin, but then it goes off and nothing else happens.

It seemed to be pretty dusty inside so I blew it out, but nothing has changed. Everything seems to get power for a fraction of a second. The lights stay on on the motherboard though. I also tried unplugging the power from the video card and all the hard drives & optical drives, but it didn't change anything either.

I'm unsure of where to start my troubleshooting. Motherboard/PS seems to be the most obvious. Is it possible to have overheated the processor? Wouldn't the MB still post?

Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips? I don't have access to any other desktops & I don't want to replace anything unless I have to.

You could try taking all the components out and cleaning then reconnecting them. I would also make sure the leads from the power button are properly connected to the motherboard.

Sounds like you may have a dead PSU. Get another one and try it out. If you would like to test it first then turn on the system and use a DMM to test one of the free Molex connectors. The yellow wire is your 12V and the red is the 5V.

You can sort of test the PSU by this process:

1. Disconnect the PSU from EVERYTHING.
2. Use a small wire or a paper clip to jump the green wire on the 24pin connector to a black wire on the 24pin connector. (There is only one green wire, and any black wire will work.)
3. Plug the PSU's main power cord in (the one that plugs into the wall / powerstrip) and make sure it is switched on.
4. You should now be able to hear the power supply running.

I hear nothing when shorting the green wire to a black wire (I tried multiple black wires to be sure).

It just never powers up.

I don't have a DMM, but I definatly need to pick one up.

I guess I should go ahead and order a new powersupply too.
