Computer does not detect PCI wireless adapter

I've been trying to get internet on my computer working with wireless products for the last week. At first I tried an old wireless USB internet thingy, but that didn't work because for some reason my computer didn't detect the device once it was plugged in... which was very strange because it worked a few months ago. So then I wanted to try something different and ordered a PCI wireless LAN card off of newegg and received it today. I put the card into my computer but it still wouldn't detect it when I tried to install the program. I even tried putting the card in different PCI slots but it still wouldn't work. And what's weird is that I have a sound card in one of my four PCI slots and that is able to be detected by my computer, yet when I tried putting the wireless LAN card in the same spot where my sound card was, it wouldn't detect the LAN card. My computer also wouldn't detect my sound card in the empty PCI slots.

What do you guys think could be the problem with my computer?

Are you running Vista? I know that there are some PCI cards out there that aren't compatible with Vista.
