While it's been my experience that ASUS doesn't test every possible stick/brand of RAM for their QVL, it's usually a good indicator of what will/won't work.
I'm running Corsair XMS 1600 RAM in my board...and it's not on the list, but only because it's DDR3-1600...which is technically not supported by my processor...but is otherwise correct.

You MAY have just found the problem.

I don't think it's the RAM. Previous Anandtech owner reported it ran fine for him.

The RAM may be perfectly fine...just not compatible with your board.

Understood, but call it only a hunch I don't think that is the problem. I have it out of the case now. It's sitting on my wooden desk. I tried to power it up and got the same results. Powers on but no video. This is without a stick of RAM. About to go try one stick at a time.

Let's see...you've tried a new motherboard, new RAM, different processors, (at least one of which works in a different board) different power supplies, and different power supplies...all of which work in other applications.

What am I missing/have wrong?

I have not tried the Athlon X2 in the new board; it doesn't support it.
I think it is the processor. I'm taking steps to acquire another.

Well, after much frustration it works!
Got a 2nd "new" cpu in today and it fired up.

Now the question is do I DARE test it in the old motherboard so I may recover some files?

What does the old board have to do with files? Those would be on a disk drive...which you SHOULD be able to access.

Yes, the old C: drive. I'm thinking that when I put the new board in Windows won't load (BSOD). If I load Windows on a spare drive temporarily will it not let me be authorized to view the old Administrators Documents?
Is the old board viable for a new project for another family member?

Well, I did it anyway and it did not work. So I just installed the working combo into the case. Everything fired up and after a couple of restarts Windows worked without a BSOD. However, when I installed the chipset drivers all USB function went away. So I saved some pictures and my Outlook files using the keyboard only (USB mouse, argh) and started a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit. No more driver conflicts and all is going well so far.
So, the verdict is that not only did I fry the previous CPU but I fried the mainboard as well.

Okaaaaaaaay, so after a fresh install I finally loaded the latest chipset drivers again and, lo and behold, same USB problem. Guess I'm stuck using the drivers from the CD that came with the board.
