OK, so - last fall I built myself a new computer - Athlon 64 3200+ (the 512K cache variant), 1 gig of OCZ RAM (timed 2-3-2-6 iirc), no-name case/PSU (i know, i know - mistake), seagate barracuda 160gig SATA, sapphire radeon 9800 pro 256mb, MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo, etc.
It's worked great - until 3 days ago.
I was playing World of Warcraft and got a total freeze - everything. Nothing worked, no response to anything, total freeze, like a screenshot almost.
Hard reboot.
Played for 5 mins, computer shuts down. Not a windows shutdown, a total loss of power shutdown. Started to get worried. Long story short, gradual decay until it wouldn't cut on. I can't immediately troubleshoot it, other than seeing my case temp go above 45 C (normally it hovers around 38-40) - so I take the side panel off. I let it sit for a bit and go to dinner, come back, watch a DiVX, no problem. I wake up and it's off again. Won't restart. Yesterday I managed to get it going again, after 2 reboots I said screw it and started looking around in BIOS to see if anything was awry. The listings for power all looked fine with some small fluctuations except for the 3.3V line, which was fluctuating at about 2.58-2.62 V. Temps looked about nominal.
About 3 minutes into looking, the computer shut down again. So that nicely rules out any software issues. Now it won't cut on at all. I've vacuumed the box, disconnected everything external (though NOT internals, like drives/AGP - that be helpful?)
So my question is thus: what the heck happened to my trusty box? I haven't made any software or hardware changes to it. I have a friend bringing a spare PSU in a couple days as I suspect PSU or motherboard issues, but what do y'all think? any words of wisdom or questions I can answer that I didn't above would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!
