What kind of computer desk do you have?

I have a pretty neat one but I would like a bigger one that would hold 3 monitors at once. I've looked around and found that http://www.anthro.com has some NICE desks but they are INCREDIBLY expensive.

My fav: http://www.anthro.com/_Ac/images/curved_dims.gif , http://www.anthro.com/_Ac_CurvedCart.asp

I wonder if I could get someone to build me a desk like the one in the diagram I linked. I wouldn't think it would be too hard and it would be ALOT cheaper than the $900 they want for this one.

Post pics of your desk!

I also looked at Anthro for a desk system, but when I added up all the extras I wanted in addition to the base desk, the price was way out there.

Sure you could have a copy built for you, but the pitch I was given by Anthro is that their products are virtually indestructible and guranteed for life. A good pitch, but wasn't worth the premium in my case.

A client of mine had a computer desk custom built. The carpenter built something nice to look at, but wasn't quite up to spec. Be very careful about measurements, dimensions, clearance, materials, etc.

I am going to be buying computer desks for my wife and I (after we get married). My first plan was to try to find a place that sold used office equipment or maybe try to find a business liquidation sale. High quality office furniture is extremely expensive, so I'm hoping to find our stuff used at a decent price. $900 is bit steep in my opinion.

have you tried staples?
the one I got from them does me fine
seen here 179.00 Item No. 394503
Bush Ashland Corner Computer Desk, Rosewood Maple Finish
I also got the hutch for another 20.00

these are less expensive but usually not built as well either
mine is actually pretty well built even though I had to assemble it
with the hutch you could set three monitors on it,but you would have to
pull it away from the wall about 6" first
I had 2 on mine, the third would be behind your left shoulder though.
without the hutch added you would be very cramped though.
but there is one desk similar to the pic you liked.
sample 1
as well as a few to check out
sample 2
and sample 3

hope this helps

That one at Staples looks fine, but DO NOT put a powerful (read: hot) PC in there. Closed computer cabinet = slow death. The PC should be outside the cabinet, if nothing else. Text[
Not bad aside from materials.
Text
Nice aside from not being a corner.

Edit: sorry about that...

I am with you on this

my computer sits on the floor under the foot area where i can easily access the cdrom
runs 43 to 50c depending on the load lol.I would hate to see what it would run behind the door lol

Three monitors + Particle board = not a good idea. One of my first desks was a particle board desk which I truly did love, but the weight of everything over a few years literally bent the particle boards even though in those days I had very little on it.

I now have a Jerker Desk from IKEA..... They don't have my exact model anymore, but Jerker is the closest thing you are going to get to an Anthro cart. I have 4 CPU's(boxes), and ThinkPAd, inkjet, fax, TV/VCR combo, Dacal CD Library, and both a 19" and 15" display.... throw in the network stuff and some books and you have my desk.

It's still particle board but with a laminate vs wood veneer. The desk uses a metal frame and all the shelves and main desk area is under-girded with metal beams. I've had it since late 1998 and I have not noticed any bending at all. It's also highly configurable..... which is why Anthro is so sought after.

I STILL want an Anthro cart, but the one I spec'd out came to over $2000......

I've been using this O'Sullivan work desk for the last couple of years. I think it supports up to 200+lbs, in addition to the extra space, so it seems to be a good fit for a dual monitor setup. I leave the door open whenver I'm using the pc of course. There's even 3 seperate cutouts for monitors/periphials on the back of the hutch. Very sturdy.

After coupons & such(free shipping for a heavy desk was beautiful), it came to about $140ish from either OM or OD.

I just got this desk, it's a bit expensive but I don't plan on buying another one for a LONG time. This desk is awesome, plenty of room storage.

Wolfsraider, I like that multi-level desk you linked in sample 1. But as WackyDan said, heavy monitors on particle board isnt too smart. Also, I don't really go for computer desks that have those closed in spaces for the tower.

I have a freakin heavy 19'' Sony E440 (it's probably close to 50 lbs) on my desk now, along with a 17'' lcd. My current desk is multi level like the one you linked. I like to have the monitor up eye level. Nothing's worse than having to look down at a monitor that sits flat on your desk.

WackyDan, IKEA DOES still make the Jerker. I got one in January with a few addon shelves, as well as a shelf I built myself out of particle board and 2x4s. I have 3 monitors and could easily do 4 if I rearranged the right shelves.

Here's a pic of my current setup.

EDIT: I am considering building an insert to make the front of the desk straight across the front. Since my desk has arms, they hit the front of the desk when I move close. I have to hunch in order to reach the keyboard/mouse with the current cutout.

I recently bought a new computer desk, and settled on this one from Staples:

O'Sullivan Diplomat "L" workcenter

Dirt-cheap, lost of desk space, fits in a corner, inch-thick particle board desktop. I think it would handle two or three monitors without a problem, unless they were all extraordinarily heavy. I can't find the manufacturer's weight specs, but I think it could handle 150-200lbs...

Any of those desks handle 19in crt monitors?? I have a samsung 955df 19in crt and its a heavy mofo. I really need a new computer desk but it needs to be able to handle the monitor. I like those O'Sullivan ones at staples.. seems good enough for my needs, but I don't know if they could handle the monitor. Don't know the weight of the monitor as the lousy manual doesn't list it. Can anyone vouch for any of these desks being able to handle the weight? thanks

I read this post because I'm preparing to buy a new computer table from Staples / Office Depot this weekend. WOW.... those desks are expensive!!! I can't fork out almost a grand for just a desk.. Looks like a solid setup.

raystorm, mine holds 2 19s on the main desk, and will hold monitors up to 66 lbs each on the side shelves. The additional center shelves you can buy (the ones above my monitors, for example) only hold 66 lbs, so I would recommend against using one of those for the 19s. A custom shelf with appropriate supports (as I built) is only a few bucks in materials.

I have a 19" Viewsonic on my O'Sullivan Diplomat. No problems there. As long as the monitor(s) is/are over the corner of this particular desk (where it's supported from underneath), I can't see it having weight problems. I wouldn't want to put anything *really* heavy off to the side, though.

Most 19" monitors would weigh between 50 and 80 pounds.

I lucked out and picked up a huge mostly metal some wood desk years ago from my father when he switched out all his office furniture (I think the company was called case steel or something like that, some well known office furniture company). I think it went for $1000+ and its sturdy as hell. I used to have two 21" monitors on it and still had room to throw a 15" on and stand on it (I am guessing it could support in the 500+ pound area, I know I have had in excess of 450 pounds on it with no problem). I am finally thinking about getting a new one though as its abit ugly and hard as hell to move (minimum of 2 strong people needed and 3+ people is what I have done if stairs are involved). I am not really sure how much it weighs, but its pretty freaking heavy. No digi cam though so no pics.

I have been looking at the Anthro stuff too but haven't made up my mind on anything yet. I also need something that can support a lot of weight and is pretty large. Particle board won't cut it for me.

My desk at home is just an old kitchen table, essentially a big slab of wood (with a leaf in the middle) and two legs (with big feet :)).
It's a little low on the features but it's rock solid, has tonnes of open space (on top and underneath) and was free :)

Well, even a decent plain kitchen table wouldn't be very expensive if you don't need the keyboard tray and such. I like mine the way it is :)

You are right... they do still sell ONE>... Not mine. Your's is very similar and the pic will help everyone see what we're talking about. Mine is black metal, and a different jerker design. Laminate is same color as yours though. Same type of frame construction, but my side shelves are different in the way they are braced, and my main desk surface is different as well. On the right and left face of my main desk slab, I have two pull/slide out extensions which are very stury and create a wrap around environment. Joystick on right, laptop on left.... Need to get a pic up soon...

Both are great desks... like mine better though :)

I use the O'sullivan L corner workstation, it's almost the same thing as the BUSH L desk pictured a few posts above, but it's a bit larger, and has a cd ladder.
