Hey all,

I'm looking for a good place to pick up a computer desk.

Mostly, I just want a large flat surface, similar to a kitchen table, but deep enough to fit a 19" CRT.

Looking to spend under $50 if possible.

Suggestions on where to get good cheap tables / desks?

It's a bit more than you're looking to spend but I've been happy with this for over a year.

That's the desk that I have. The best computer desk I have ever owned. I have my tower on the right (you can remove the middle shelf) and then I have 2 SFF systems that fit nicely on the two left shelves. It has space on left and right between the top of the desk to store random things. I have my wireless receiver, GTXP breakout box, and a KVM in between there. It's like the perfect computer desk.

I have a really nice solid oak desk that my parents put in storage. They bought it for $2000 or so. I had to make some modifcations (cut off the back panel, cut some holes), but its a nice desk.

LOL, 50$ not 5000$

You could probably build one yourself very cheaply. Grap some High density fiber board at Home Depot to the size you want it, brace the bottom of it with some steel so the monitor doesnt cause the top to warp, get some wooden legs.

bump here..thanks for the ideas so far... but i'm looking for some low-budget ideas. Basically, I LOVE just a flat surface.... where can I find just a simple table with nothing else? (i don't think a folding table would be sturdy enough)

Ya so,

I suck at building things. Plus, I want it to look pretty nice. I've seen some countertops for sale...maybe combine those with some file cabinets for a simple desk?

Looks good, but I have a mid-tower system, which will never fit in those mini racks.

You can leave the middle shelf out on one or both sides. I have an Antec P160 and it fits. Maybe 1/2 inch more on the top available. Should fit most cases except really really big ones.

????????

You could dance on one of those things, at least the ones I have. I have both my kids PC's on one folding table, a 19" and 17" CRT's, keyboards, scanner, speakers, and about a cajillion CD's. I don't have the kind in the link though. Mine have metal legs and pressboard tops with a plastic laminate. Very sturdy. I am sure people use these all the time at LAN parties and have 2 PC's per table. For storage just buy one of those huge 4 drawer rolling storage deals that fits under the table.

The nice thing with the folding table is that you can always store it and/or use it for other stuff later when you can afford a real computer desk.

I agree with John P. You can not get a better computer desk/work table than just a plain old 5 or 6 foot folding table (you might want to consider one than has the new hard foam type top - the only drawback that I see to that material as opposed to the old style is that on some of them the laser mice will not track on the surface to well and you will have to use a mouse pad). This gives you a nice flat working surface for all of your components, it is easy to get to your cords, etc. (leave the table about 6 to 8 inches from the wall), & it is easy to move to different place in your room, if you need to.

Good luck

I use a plain brown, 6 foot table. I am able to put two computer systems on this with either a telephone or printer inbetween the monitors.

However, I will concede the wife does not appreciate the plain brown, 6 foot table and wishes to replace with a white top, corner desk from Ikea. I do not want the corner desk since there are no windows in the corner of the room my computers are in. As I have it now, there is a window directly above and behind my current setup with the table against the wall, instead of in the dark corner.
