I spend close to $300 on a computer desk, that I am now really disappointed in. But oh well.

But since this is the best availible, even though I don't like it that much, its better than anything else.

I am working on designing a desk that actually works right for computer users. Once I get the design I will patent it (if possible).

Two things, adjustable keyboard and mouse height. and adjustable monitor hieght. Also good short cable paths. And no sliding keyboard tray!, or if one, its actually wide enough to put the mouse on.

Anything else anyone wants to add?

I like my computer desk right now but you should design one, mine is only decent for the computer. Here is is

Left side is long then it curves and its very deep by the curve and there is a short right side.

The keyboard slide sucks but oh well ...

I have my monitor deep in the curve part (and the keyboard tray is ligned up with the curve) I have my scanner and cable modem on the right part, the printer all the way to the left so i have lots of room to work.

There really needs to be a desk for computer users.

There should be a built in paper tray, cause I got tons of papers, ranging from IP Addresses, websites, bits of code et etc.

Good idea about the paper handling crap. I will add a cork board to it. I think the only way is a desk that is L shaped. Or got an angle in it. I also want to design it so it works with dual monitors well.

You have to have plenty of airspace around the computer as well. Some people, such as myself, are fan crazy. We need that air circulation, dammit! :p

Consider that I am an overclocker... yes I have plans for that. Mainly that the computer would not be blocked whatsoever except maybe on the right side.

room for dual monitors(and big ones, not just 15 inchers.....i want room for 2 21 inchers :D),

- built in cd rack

-L-shaped design for placement in a corner

Also, I sit in a recliner...I would love a retractable arm that moves around for my mouse pad.

And what you don't see is that the panel in the back of the cabinet on my current desk has a hole cut out for all the fans and the slots and everything. So basically its unrestricted airflow from the fron to the back, and the back is separated from the front so the air doesn't recirculate.

Chip, my plans exactly too. See my desk? See that 21 incher on it? I want dual monitors and I have a 17" to add to it.

Keyboard trays are sorry little mongrel morons. Heh. I hate those things. My biggest complaint is that they put them so low that your legs bump into them. Sure, I could probably put my chair on the floor, but then I can't reach most of the desk, other than the damn keyboard tray. Crap.

I like a corner desk for computing, though I don't have one at home. If I position the monitor in the corner, I can rest my elbows on the desk thereby significantly reducing arm strain from having "floating" arms. It really helps a great deal.

I would also demand a computer enclosure (like the one in your picture) with enough room for a decent tower and enough room on the sides for decent airflow. Cable guides would be nice. Plus, there needs to be some drawers on the damn thing -- something that is NEVER included on computer desks for some reason. I have one with a hutch and several little cubby holes, which is rather nice (except it's one with an offset monitor stand, ie. it's on the side facing toward the center at an angle).

A sensible place for speakers is nice, and those places need to accommodate speakers larger than the dinky generics that come with pre-built systems -- some people do have decent sound systems on their computers! Further, there needs to be some room on the bottom for a subwoofer.

One thing I have NEVER seen but would be awesome -- foot rests! I'd love that.

Well, I better hit the woodshop! :D

I am going to crank the tunes, push the keyboard back and start drawing some concepts and scan them in.

What I think would truly kick ass for us is a desk with the ability to mount the motherboard in a cupboard, and have the drives in the front or something. Integrated case. But that doesn't work well for lan parties and crap.

Its also been a good 5 years since I last did any drafting. So I will only do concept drawings. Once I am done with those I will attempt to make the drawings for it.

I have space for three monitors right now. I only have dual monitors (Matrox). What I like about this desk is that one monitor sits under the glass desk and looks out at you at an angle. It's wonderful b/c that monitor takes no desk space, and when not using this monitor, you have a REAL workspace. Consider adding this feature to your desk. It took me forever to find a desk that had this feature; i wish more desks did

Actually besides being what looks like a nice chair, the actual workspace is too small to be usable.

I wish I had a camera, I'd post a pic of my nutty desk.

My keyboard slider is nice... not enough room for a mouse when using the keyboard regularly, but when I'm playing games, I can get it diagonal and rest the joystick on it.

My desk holds my stereo, 2 large speakers, VCR, CD Rack, 4 spaces under the stereo for CD's, Books, Bills, and blank media, a cabinet with boxes and cards in it, under the cabinet is my Hub and Cable modem, under that is my computer paper. Beside the cabinet and hub is my monitor /w 2 computer speakers, mouse in front, telephone and a big mess of Cd's and tools. Keyboard slider is underneath, drawer beside it with lots of paper and networking cabling. Under the drawer is my Celeron box and beside that in a seperate compartment is my smaller 486 box.

Update:

To do a corner desk and have it work would require 7ft down one wall and 9ft down the other.

I think the best solution is a 5ft deep desk thats 8ft long. With a place to put the CPU underneath.

Variable sized cup holders are a must.:p Even with all of the complimentary coasters AOL sends me I don't have enough room for my much needed caffine supply.:D Seriously, though, built-in cup holders would be really nice.:)

A keyboard tray mounted at desk level in an indented area that could move up or down would be nice too. It should be able to rotate from left to right when above or below the desk and it should be possible to keep it locked in that location so pounding the keyboard while trying to use an MS program will not move it to my feet (I'm just trying to make your life difficult).:p:p

The solid lines are where the desk's edges are and the equal signs represent the tray. The periods are only there to make the formatting work.

That's probably confusing...oh well:eek:
