Computer Dead from Electrical Surge: Options?

My computer is totally dead as a result of an electrical surge (the computer was on and OK when I went to bed, I woke up in the middle of the night from thunder, it was totally dead in the morning--and the post office a block away lost its modem that same night).

What are the probabilities as to what components have malfunctioned (people mention power supply, graphics card, motherboard...). Can you check without sophisticated equipment? This is a several year old desktop PC with a used market value of maybe $125 on eBay. Is is worth attempting to repair?

Thanks.

Hard to say percentage wise. Some people get away with just a dead psu but if you had protection then just maybe a dead fuse.

There is a good chance the motherboard is fried. Only way to tell is to turn it on and boot with certain stuff not plugged in.

I guess buy another cheap pc?

If it made it to your Ethernet card, yeah, there could be a good bit gone (honestly I have seen power surges take out modems, but getting through Ethernet to the computer is a much rarer event). But most of the time it's just the power supply.
