after cleaning out my hs today and putting everything back in i started up my computer now t gives me the start windows normally or old settings speal and after i hit any of them the bar maybe goes half way or so and then the system resets. I can sit in bios just fine without it locking up. Thinking that i may have corrupted windows i tried booting from windows install cd and it doesn't freeze until it says starting windows. any ideas on what the problem is
thanks in advance,

I'd look at the motherboard for bulging capacitors. It sounds like a hardware issue to me though as windows won't install.

First thing I'd check is your memory, then peripherial cards that you may have installed. It could be your motherboard also, but that isn't usually the cause (although it's happened to me once). Finally, when you attempt to reinstall, unplug all the cords going into your computer except for your keyboard, mouse, VGA, and power.

Yeah i should have thought of that but in my rage against the machine just wanted to hit it. Oddly enough i just re-seated all the ram and all was well despite never having taken it out in the first place.

Thank you for your help,
