Why oh why did you reformat... I guess ignorance is bliss. You didn't really HAVE to do that.. but too late now.

That error just means exactly what it says. NTLDR is missing. NTLDR is a file on your C:\ that contains the boot loader. Hense the name NTLDR = NT LOADER. Usually this happens when people carelessly delete files, or there is some kind of virus that deletes the files (less likely).

Did you change anything recently? Add new hard drives? Install a new app? Browse any porn?

You could have copied the file from your windows xp CD to the C:\ within the repair console on the setup disk.

I did recently overclock a little but the computer was running stable and then overnight when it was shut down it could not boot back up. also i did try reinstalling the file but when i tried to boot from the windows os cd it would not boot, it would just go to a blank black screen.

you shouldn't wipe drives clean to fix small problems and in consequence lose a bunch of important data, "if there was any"
restorations should be one of the last resorts

repair the OS if you're really lazy

losing data shouldn't be an issue, this is why everyone needs to keep an up-to-date backup on an external hard drive and/or set of DVDs. Repairing the OS is probably the best way to go, but if you don't know why the file is missing, there might be other problems with the OS and its functionality that haven't shown up yet. I'd do a reformat just to guarantee that everything would work fine. Course, i DO keep a backup of each drive in my PC, including a folder that includes all the .exes for programs i regularly use and would need to reinstall on a format. Makes reformatting extremely easy for me (even though it's still time-consuming to reinstall everything and replace the files).
