Hi,

Recently, my PC will crash when to read some files. So far, I only notice trouble reading 2 files stored on my half year old 1TB WD hard disk. Therefore, I tried to do the scan disk to fix the problem. However, my computer also crash when it is scanning until phase 4. Is this problem caused by corrupted file system? Or is it mean my hard disk is going to die soon? Is it still safe to store my data in it? HDD Health software still shows my hard disk health 100%.

Why don't you try to copy those two files to another location then try reading it again. If a file is corrupt you will receive an on-screen error, not a reboot. Did you know that W7 ScanDisk phase 4 will seem inactive for periods of time during testing (mine stops at 12% for like 15 minutes then moves a little).

I usually recommend downloading Western Digital Diagnostic tool from WD's website to test your hard drive, but this utility fails to load on my system for some reason. Seems like a lot of people have a similiar loading issues, but you can try to see if it works for you.

Sounds like a dying hard drive, have you tried running the western digital data lifeguard utility from a bootable cd/floppy to see if it finds issue with the disk?
