computer cannot detect WPA2

once i changed the wpa settings on my linksys WRT54GS to wpa2+aes my laptop cant detect it's signal, since wpa2 is more secre i want to use it. is this a hardware problem with my wireless card? are there anyway to make wpa2 compatible with the routers wpa2 settings, will a simple drivers update fix the problem?

Yes, my router supports it, if it doesn't then there wouldn't be a wpa2+aes option. but not sure if my wireless card supports it or not. will download sp2 solve the problem?

if your not running SP2 I would suggest it. Then install the patch I linked above. I am running WPA2+AES on my WRT54G with that patch on SP2 w/ no issues.

cool. were you having the same problem as i am without sp2?

also, about mac filtering what exactly is the difference between:

Prevent PCs listed from accessing the wireless

Permit only PCs listed to access the wireless network

it saids ..If you want to block specific wireless-equipped PCs from communicating with the Router, then keep the default setting, Prevent PCs listed from accessing the wireless network. If you want to allow specific wireless-equipped PCs to communicate with the Router, then click the radio button next to Permit only PCs listed to access the wireless network.

i dont see any difference between the 2 since they both block access to your wireless, i'm guess the PERMIT is the right option for mac fitering?

I have only been running WPA2+AES since I installed SP2.

Yes, Permit is what you want. It will only allow DHCP addresses to be given to machines with the allowed MAC addresses.

looks to me that they are pretty much the same, what exactly is the difference? once i enter the mac address in the premit field it also listed the address in the prevent field aswell.

prevent is for entering someones mac address in the prevent field and deny their acess to your wireless network?

Yes... but if they spoof their mac address they can get in... Not as good as permit... IMO

when i entered the mac address in permit, then howcome it automatically listed PREVENT aswell?

Because the router just keeps a list of all of the MAC addresses you have stored. You then choose whether to Permit those addresses to access the network, or Prevent them from accessing the network by selecting the appropriate option in the router configuration (on most routers it can only be either Permit for all or Prevent for all - you can't pick and choose between them). As previously mentioned, just make sure all of your legitimate MAC addresses are on the list then choose Permit and your router will ONLY allow your computers to connect.

when i first entered the mac address in permit only, it also stores the number on it's networks but you only see the mac address in others fileds and only visible but it actually doesn't apply it. maybe thats why i'm seeing the same mac address in prevent when i click on edit mac filter list? am i right?

The mac list is the same whether you click on permit or prevent. I'm not sure why Solodays is still confused about this setting. 😛

yes, that's why i thought. so when you click on prevent and enter a mac address it will also listed in permit?

this is bad programming!
