Computer Cannot Acquire Network

I have 2 computers on a network and all of a sudden today one can no longer get a strong enough signal to acquire a network signal. When I do ipconfig, it will only show the IP Address and a subnet mask ID, but no default gateway.

I went to the router and switched ports with the computer that was working with the one that could not get a signal. I still could not get a network signal, and the other computer was working OK off of the other port.

On the computer that was not working I had just finished uninstalling Norton Antivirus, and had installed Panda Antivirus. I made sure the firewall was turned off and only the virus protection was running. Incidentally, the other comptuter on the network runs Panda antivirus without issue.

There happened to be a severe thunderstorm in the area with lighting hitting very close, but there was never a loss of power, or even a flicker of the lights.

I have done ipconfig /release, then ipconfig/renew, but still cannot acquire a signal.

What suggestions do you guys have. I am totally stumped on this one.

Let me also add, that I did uninstall Panda and went to the security center for Windows and made sure all security options were turned off.

Still could not acquire a sufficient signal.

Please help.

TIA, john

Debug Network.

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One - Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two - Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three - Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

What happens when you type in ipconfig into a cmd window? If it says something about an adapter not being present then you should check your hardware and make sure your NIC is enabled within BIOS if it's an onboard NIC or if it's a PCI NIC make sure it's seated correctly. Also make sure your cable is connected firm and if you have a light indicator make sure it is indicating that it is in properly and sending and receiving data. Otherwise, I would say try changing your cable, it might be busted.
