computer can ping, can't see..

I have a Win2k adv. server machine on my network, however, it can't see the rest of the network. It 'used' to be able to see the other computers..

I checked its IP, subnet, gateway, dns.. it's the same as the other computers.

Errr, nevermind it works now. I had to 'Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP'. This machine is going to be a webserver, are there any problems I should be aware of by enabling that option?

you can use microsoft's proprietary WINS, windows internet name server/service [???] ... from what I know it is basically netbios, but without the flaws [cough].

Enabling "Netbios over TCP/IP" on your webserver is okay...if you have a properly configured firewall between it and the Internet. But it isn't scalable (just ask Spidey )😉

Yeah, it's fine. IF you have a firewall between it and the internet and the FW is properly configured.

If that server is bare a$$ed on the net then there precautions to take.

Strangely enough I had the exact same problem on my Windows 2000 Pro desktop, and not my Windows 2000 Pro laptop, and as far as I could tell, they were set up the same way. I dunno what obscure setting had been changed or something, but it was enough to make that desktop pingable but not consistently networkable unless I used NetBIOS or NetBeui.

At first it didn't matter that much, because I was using Win on all computers behind a firewall. But then I bought a Linux-based MP3 receiver (from Dell) and it refused to see that desktop but would work with the laptop fine.

I finally just bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro on the desktop and the problems went away. Networking with TCP/IP alone (no NetBeui or NetBIOS over TCP/IP) now works fine.

What's yer IP? I'll scan yer ports and let you know which are open. Nevermind the extra disk activity and missing files. 😉

You can also try ShieldsUp, but it only scans a handful of ports...

Eug: It worked for me before too w/o netbios. But now it's being screwy. I probably should reinstall again sometime..
