After doing some research I have decided to build my own computer I was just wondering what you (having more knowledge about what to buy) would recommend?
I have a budget of about $1000 to about $1500 maybe $2000 anyway I was just wondering what you thought I should get?
I use my computer mostly for games like HALO 2, HELF LIFE 2 and DOOM 3.
I also use my computer for all my MP3s and my 100 something DVDs.
I am looking to get the parts online not at a store.
I also was wondering what monitor (LCD) you would recommend for about $300 maybe $500?
Also what speakers would you recommend for a $100 to a $200 price tag preferable five or seven speaker system?

Look at the top of this forum. JPeyton has an excellent guide for various price points; see what kind of parts you demand and tailor it from there.

Antec Sonata case with 380W Power supply
ATI OEM SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB DVI/TV 8X AGP
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum MoBo Socket 939
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939
SAMSUNG 160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive
Logitech X-620 6.1 Speaker
CHAINTECH 7.1 Channel PCI Sound Card
Mushkin Dual Pack 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200

I am building my first system and with tons of research last 2 weeks this is what I have come up with. I play games too but more mmorpg. This set up seems to be able to handle what should be any game out there from what all the parts reviews have been that I have seen. The total comes around $950 without a monitor and keyboard&mouse. The speaker set is 7 piece. Go to www.newegg.com and look or I can link them all for you if you want.

Oh and this "NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive" is on sale like mad. $62.99 for the better looking black drive which is normally $69.00. I'd suggest buying asap if you need one.

I rule,

I think you nailed it dead center with your parts selection. I wouldn't change a thing other than maybe a Segate or Raptor hard drive. Oh, and maybe add a Zalman cooler to knock down on the cpu fan noise.

Good job.

If you really want to build your own computer. Do some research first. Don't leave everything up to people online.

I tend to agree with this sediment. Asking around online and in person was the route I first took but eventually I did a lot of research and settled on stuff I felt would suit my needs and wallet. It just gets so confusing when asking people's opinions regarding what is best or what to go with because you'll get so many differing ideas.

But of course this question of "what would you recommend?" will always be asked in forums such as this one. Eventually the one's asking this question will ultimately go with an educated decision and not only what guys said a forum or newsgroup.
