Computer Build For End Of March

Cooler Master Centurion 5 Case

ASUS A8N-E

eVGA 7600GT PCI-e

Fortron Source 450W PSU

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester

Patriot Signature (2 x 1GB) DDR 400

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 250GB SATA

Total is a little over $900
I don't plan on using SLI, hence the non-SLI motherboard. And the only overclocking I plan on doing will be on the processor. (I plan on bringing it up 2.2 GHz as soon as I get it and possibly more in the future)
I already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.
Is there any suggestions to the build?

1.I'll be doing a good amount of gaming, but the resolution will never be higher than 1280 x 1024 (it's the highest my monitor supports).
2. I'll be willing to pay a little more than $900 but only like $50 or so
3. Already answered

nice setup other than the graphics. I think a 6800GS maybe better. Or an X850XT. The 6800GS has 256 bit memory but the core isn't as fast.

X850XT=16 pixel pipelines, 520/1080
7600GT=12 pixel pipelines, 560/1400

I recommended X850XT which are cheaper than 7600gt but better than 6800gs and x800gto2

I can get my x850xt to 600/1400 on stock cooling, but it runs really hot.

I recommend an opteron 165 instead of a x2 3800+

1) Only $30 more
2) 2mb l2 cache instead of 1mb
3) Opterons are server grade cpus, tested more extensively and thus are more stable
4) very overclockable. My x2 3800 maxed out at 2.3ghz. My opty can get up to 2.7ghz

I don't think so, the opterons are really great cpus that are tested well.
I'm probobly going to build a rig like yours soon, nice setup, personally I would spend more on the video card for a 7900GT or an X1800XT, but if you're tight on money the 7600 or X850XT should serve you well.

Not a chance

Edit: also the stock heatsink that comes with the opteron is really good. Way better than the one that comes with the 3800.

OP, the 7600GT is a better card, i believe, even though it has less pipes. either way, they're both good choices. enjoy building 🙂

What are you using now? Can't hang out for a few+ months? Even if you don't go Conroe, your proposed build could be several hundred dollars cheaper.

I too am planning on upgrading very soon, maybe today...the two CPUs I'm thinking of are:

Intel Pentium 4 640 3.2ghz prescott <--- I know it's a no brainer..just needed some support saying yes get this one.
or
AMD 64 3700+ San Diego

Both are going for 212.00, Dual core not just yet.

Asus MB A8n32-SLI not really going to use SLI so should I even get a M/B that supports it? or is it just a waste? What would be a good ASUS non SLI, I probably will not overclock at 1st..still a newie at building, but later I would like to option to overclock.

I'm sure the Intel is the way to good? is this a good chip or is it a problem child?
Video proabably just pickup the 6800GS.

So any help would be greatly Appreciated!

Thanks in advance....

My specs now are:
Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) at 3.06 GHz
512 MB PC1066 RDRAM
128 MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
120 GB Ultra ATA/100
Sound Blaster Audigy 2

I like the setup the way it is, just make sure the RAM works well with your mobo.

EDIT: I do like what someone said about a soundcard. You don't need anything fancy. Just something so that the MOBO isn't responsible for sound. Soundblaster is a good brand.

I also respect the Opteron 165 comment, but keep in mind that overclocking can be a lot of work. If you are going to overclock I might also go with a different MOBO and RAM.

Damnit, when will people stop referring to server grade chipsets as if us non-Opty users are just running OC'ed Z80's? You can put anything you want in a server, from an Opterion to a Xeon or a Pentium 4 HT, Vanilla P4, Athlon XP, Athlon Classic, Duron, Pentium III or II, all the way down to the 486DX2. The only difference between a server and a regular machine is that the server is running server applications, like Apache, MySQL, qmail, etc...

The Opterion series are nothing more than the SMP capable Athlon series, except for the 1xx series which are the 'oc' series.

If I put an X2 in a server, is AMD going to run up to me and say OMG N00B!!11111111111 Yu0 n3eD OpT3r10n!!11111111
