Computer boots to a blank screen when powered on.

  1. 1st Signs of problems
Computer goes in sleep mode, will not wake up(turn that off)
Games started freezes a few time (fallout3/Oblivion). It's odd because I can play fallout3, farcry2, Oblivion, but when I tired to play an older game Age of Empire 3 the screen goes blank, and I have game intro/menu sound.

Now when I turn on my computer, it doesn't boot up, LCD screen is black and power light goes green to a flashing amber, all fans come on, HHD lights up, it sounds like it wants to boot but nothing goes up on screen.
  2. Things I've Done
Removed Ram and Video card, unplugged/replugged all cables, made sure everything was seated properly.
    Reinstall video drivers
Swapped out video cards 8600gs / 8500gt - when I put in the 8500gt card boots up in blind man res 300X600 which can not be changed. I get device can not be started (code 10)error in the device manager.
Replaced the PSU - After reading other threads I thought maybe its the PSU, plus its a easy task, Hey now I have a backup PSU.

    * When I unplug all USB items (mouse/keyboard) and the speakers - 9 out of 10 times it boots up.

Now I haven't tried to see if it would boot without only 1 stick of ram.

I'm kind of thinking it the CPU? like it cant handle booting up w/ everything plugged in??
Thanks in advance for your help.

  3. My hardware

    • Build this Mad Dog in 06
    • AMD 3700 2.21ghz
    • Mobo Asus A8N-E
    • 6800gs / 8500gt(swapped for testing
    • 2 GB DDR400 Ram
    • Win XP

P.S Working on wife for an upgrade.......I think she might go far it, then I can hand this rig over to my kids

It looks like your CPU died on you. I suggest trying it on a different mobo if you have one lying around, or replacing the cpu and see what happens, just to make sure. Good luck ;)

Well thanks for the info...

This morning it booting up find w/ everything plugged in...very odd.

Maybe the cpu has a dead spot on it , if that's possible.

Time for an upgrade....she was a good machine!!!

CPU's very seldom just go bad. Just as in this case If it boots randomly such as you describe it is more likely the MB or something else.

I was kind of thinkng the mobo too, cause CPU work or do not work.(correct?)

Also would a bad stick of ram cause issues like this? If one stick of ram was bad wouldnt it just boot with the one good stick all the time and just show 1gb instead of 2gb?

Thanks again

Not always but usually. Since 1988 I have never seen a CPU go bad without another issue causing it; Heat, Overclocking, Defective motherboard, Defective power supply, Bad Capacitors on the motherboard, Operator error.

Yes a bad stick or flaky RAM could cause issues just like those.

Probably not.

Well the issue was with my ViewSonic VX922. My poor PC, been beating it up over this issue and it wasn't even it's fault. Had a friend bring over his LCD screen. PC booted up every time without any problems using his screen (multi boots for 2 hours test). I would of tried the TV but my 6800 card doesn't have a TV out.....dang dang.

Well thank you all for your help..
